Heart Rate Neurons

Here is our newest design “Heart Rate Neurons”, in collaboration with Labfront!

The parasympathetic neuron is using the neurotransmitter acetycholine (“ACh”), to decrease heart rate. The sympathetic neuron is using both epinephrine (“E”, also known as adrenaline) and norepinephrine (“NE”, also known as noradrenaline) to increase heart rate. This occurs during the “fight or flight” response. The parasympathetic and sympathetic systems are part of the autonomic nervous system. They help control the heart rate to meet the varying need of the body’s cells for oxygen and nutrients.
